Diane Keaton week

It’s been Diane Keaton week here at Fusebox Design. We watched Woody Allen’s classic Annie Hall last weekend. There are lots of fashion moments throughout (Diane’s hat, tie, waistcoat and chino pants, for example). This week I’m working my way through her recently published autobiography, Then Again. But what has really caught my eye is this lovely portrait of Diane Keaton...

Paris versus New York

Vahram Muratyan is a graphic designer who has made a name for himself with his blog (and now book) Paris vs. New York –  a playful visual comparison between the two cities. It’s cute and clever and made me smile. Have a look here for more of his great prints and the newly-released...

In a nut-shell

Many of my picture books when I was a kid were stories of princesses, gnomes, fairies and forests. I knew that the word of Peter Rabbit and The Famous Five just was not mine. I loved Milly Molly Mandy, but she lived in a cottage with a thatched roof – and I wasn’t really sure what that meant. But I was devoted to May Gibbs’ beautiful illustrations of Sugglepot and Cuddlepie, the...

Goodbye Morran

I’ve followed the blog of Swedish illustrator Camilla Engman for a few years now. Her dog Morran was the star of the show. She was such a special little character. Camilla photographed Morran on holidays in the south of France, in the Dolomites, in Spain, not to mention at cafes, at gallery openings, on walks and in her home. Morran died of lung cancer a few weeks ago. But in the weeks...

Christmas wrapping

We hope you had a magic Christmas? We certainly did. There was lots of fun, food and laughter with our favourite people. One gift I received was Luke Nguyen’s latest cookbook Indochine – Baguettes and banh mi: finding France in Vietnam. It’s full of Alan Benson’s wonderful photography and has given me a terrible dose of the travel bug. After exchanging and unwrapping gifts, we...

Jobs biography

Peter has been glued to his iPhone reading the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson. It’s a page turner. For a graphic designer a world without Jobs is unthinkable. I have sat in front of one of his Apple computers every single day of my professional life. Jobs was a truly weird man in many ways. The overwhelming feeling you’re left with is that he was a high-functioning narcissist...

An inspirational job

As a young teacher in north Queensland our friend Mike Rimmer was tasked with writing a quick brochure about the history of the town of Ravenshoe. Forty years later his little brochure has become a three volume history of the Cairns hinterland. Up the Palmerston is a wonderful, accessible history (illustrated by the author’s own photographs) of the colourful residents, abandoned mining...
