A sweet beekeeper film
Posted by Alex on Feb 28, 2012 For some time I’ve been thinking about hosting a bee hive here in our garden. There seems to be a lot of happy bees about, so I guess they like it. I worry about a world without bees. They are in strife. Imagine a world without honey (very much less sweet). Imagine a world without bees pollinating plants (catastrophic). Further investigations will be required now that I’ve seen this...read more
Dandelions
Posted by Alex on Jan 3, 2012 I had to share this installation by German artist Regine Ramseier (which she made as part of the ArToll Summer Lab 2011). It involved the suspension of 2,000 dandelion flowers in a simple white room. Quite beautiful. She hand-picked the flowers, sprayed them with an adhesive and transported them in her car in a specially designed palette before hanging them. In the future I doubt I will ever blow...read more
The first gardenia of summer
Posted by Alex on Dec 20, 2011 You know it’s Christmas time in Australia when the electrical symphony of cicadas fills your ears and you have to kick off your doona at night. But here at Fusebox Design I really know Santa is coming when the gardenia at the front door fills the air with its beautiful...read more
Ginko leaves

Summer garden bliss
Posted by Alex on Dec 7, 2011 There’s nowhere I’d rather be right now than enjoing an evening meal on a warm summer’s evening in my garden. Summer is all about life outdoors here in Australia, so I’m going to wrap up this right now and get out there. Here’s a great shot of the Dry Garden at Lambley Nursery in Ascot, Victoria. It’s one of the most inspiring Australian gardens I’ve...read more
Orange flower image
Posted by Alex on Oct 18, 2011 One of a series of images produced using a flatbed scanner as a ‘very limited depth of field camera’ and a truckload of Photoshop for an album cover by Switch 3. The super high resolution meant we were later able to run a limited edition of 1×1 metre prints of this...read more

Kale tale
Posted by Alex on Jul 12, 2011 My gardening skills are never going to see us through a famine. But I’m happy to report that there are a few things that do consistently well in the Fusebox vege garden. Kale is one of them. I recently heard Australian gardening guru Peter Cundall put his health and longevity down to the fact that he ate kale everyday – he’s a spritely 83. Photo: Fusebox...read more
Winter colour and perfume
Posted by Alex on Jun 29, 2011 Things are looking particularly sleepy outside in the Fusebox garden. But there are a few spots of joy – including kumquats with blossoms and ripening fruit.read more
Someone’s house: found in my garden
Posted by Alex on May 4, 2011 I recently found this bird’s nest in my garden. How clever are those birds? Just look at it. Relative to my size, there is no way I could replicate such a feat. Now it sits, like a piece of wild art, on the bookshelf. Once someone’s little home. © Fusebox...read more
A forest inside
Posted by Alex on May 4, 2011 Even with a week of hindsight, my favourite thing from the recent British royal wedding was the trees in Westminster Abbey. Perhaps I’m not the first person to feel like I’m in a forest inside those big, old Gothic cathedrals. There’s the towering columns, diffuse light, the stillness and the smell. You should watch for mushrooms...read more
Tulips
Posted by Alex on Aug 19, 2010 Some aerial images of the tulip fields in Holland. Beautiful.I was in Dubai a few years ago and was amazed to visit a florist which had beautiful blooms (including tulips from Holland) shipped in daily from all over the world. In the desert sands those tulips seemed a long way from...read more
